Scientist of the week
Harold E. Varmus
- Born on December 18th 1939 - Nobel Prize Winner & Director of National Cancer Insititute.
- Demonstrated the cellular origins of the oncogene (A gene that in certain circumstances transforms a cell into a tumor cell) of a chicken retrovirus.
I thought this was pretty interesting, and worth investigating!
He showed that normal genes in healthy cells can sometimes cause cancer - oncogenes, these genes undergo cellular
growth and division, but, if these genes are absorbed into viruses or
affected by substancse capable of causing cancer in living tissue (carcinogens), they can trigger cancer.
